The third revelation of Jesus (Jn 21:14-21:14)

“This was now

The third time

That Jesus appeared

To the disciples,

After he was raised

From the dead.”

τοῦτο ἤδη τρίτον ἐφανερώθη Ἰησοῦς τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἐγερθεὶς ἐκ νεκρῶν.

John uniquely indicated that this was now the third time (τοῦτο ἤδη τρίτον) that Jesus (Ἰησοῦς) had appeared (ἐφανερώθη) to his disciples (τοῖς μαθηταῖς) after he was raised from the dead (ἐγερθεὶς ἐκ νεκρῶν).   The first two were in Jerusalem, chapter 20:19-23 and chapter 20:26-29.  The individual apparition to Mary Magdalene, in chapter 20:14-17, was not mentioned here.  There were other apparitions of Jesus in the synoptic gospels also.  In Matthew, chapter 28:9-10, Jesus appeared to the women who went to the tomb as well as the eleven apostles in Galilee, in chapter 28:16-20, that is somewhat like here.  Mark also had Jesus appear to Mary Magdalene, in chapter 16:9, as well as to two people walking in the country, chapter 16:12, and the eleven apostles as they were at table in Jerusalem, in chapter 16:14.  Luke also had Jesus apparitions to the two men on the way to Emmaus, chapter 24:13-35, then to the apostles in Jerusalem, chapter 24:36-48.  Thus, Jesus appeared to many of his disciples and the women who came to the tomb.  Are you troubled by the number of appearances of Jesus after his resurrection?
