“Jesus said to him.
‘Have you believed
Because you have seen me?
Blessed are those
Who have not seen me
And yet have come to believe!’”
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὅτι ἑώρακάς με, πεπίστευκας; μακάριοι οἱ μὴ ἰδόντες καὶ πιστεύσαντες.
John uniquely indicated that Jesus (ὁ Ἰησοῦς) said to Thomas (λέγει αὐτῷ) that he had believed (πεπίστευκας) in Jesus because he had seen him (Ὅτι ἑώρακάς με). However, more blessed or happy (μακάριοι) are those who have not seen (οἱ μὴ ἰδόντες) Jesus, but yet have come to believe (καὶ πιστεύσαντες) in him. What about all the other people who would never get to see the resurrected Lord Jesus? They would be happy or blessed because they believed in Jesus without seeing his hands and sides. Thus, the many future believers in Jesus could be blessed also. Can you be blessed and as happy as someone who has not seen the resurrected Lord Jesus?
