Remember what I told you (Jn 16:4-16:4)

“But I have said

These things

To you,

So that when their hour comes

You may remember

That I told you

About them.

I did not say

These things

To you

From the beginning,

Because I was with you.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that he had said these things to them (ἀλλὰ ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν), so that when their hour came (ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἡ ὥρα αὐτῶν), they would remember them (μνημονεύητε αὐτῶν), that he had told them (ὅτι ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν).  He had not said (οὐκ εἶπον) these things to them (ταῦτα δὲ ὑμῖν) from the beginning (ἐξ ἀρχῆς), because he was with them (ὅτι μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἤμην).  The expected hour of persecution was coming for Jesus and his followers.  Jesus had not told them about this in the beginning, because he was with them and could explain things as they went along.  Now, he was clear.  They had to watch out for persecutions after his death and resurrection.  Are you willing to be persecuted for being a Christian?
