“No one has
To lay down
For one’s friends.”
μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην οὐδεὶς ἔχει, ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ.
John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that no one had (οὐδεὶς ἔχει) greater love than this (μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην), to lay down one’s life (ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ) for one’s friends (ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ). The greatest love for someone else was to give up their lives for them. Jesus would show his great love for humans by giving up his life on the cross. Dying for friends was also a common Greek philosophical thought. Is there someone that you would give up your life for?
