They remembered later (Jn 12:16-12:16)

“His disciples

Did not understand

These things

At first.

But when Jesus

Was glorified,

Then they remembered

That these things

Had been written

Of him.

They had been done

To him.”

Then John uniquely indicated that Jesus’ disciples (αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ) did not know or understand (οὐκ ἔγνωσαν) these things (Ταῦτα) at first (τὸ πρῶτον).  However (ἀλλ’), when Jesus (Ἰησοῦς) was glorified (ἐδοξάσθη), then they remembered (τότε ἐμνήσθησαν) that these things (ὅτι ταῦτα) had been written about him (ἦν ἐπ’ αὐτῷ γεγραμμένα) and done (καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν) to him (αὐτῷ).  In other words, not even the disciples of Jesus understood what Jesus was talking about until after his glorious resurrection.  Basically, the inspiration of the Holy Spirit inspired the apostles and disciples retroactively to remember these Judaic prophecies about the Messiah king of Israel and how they applied to Jesus.  They then understood the saving plan of God the Father in the light of Jesus, the Christ.  Are you sometimes confused?
