The great crowd at the festival (Jn 12:12-12:12)

“The next day,

A great crowd

That had come

To the festival

Heard

That Jesus was coming

To Jerusalem.”

Then John indicated that the next day (Τῇ ἐπαύριον), after the dinner at Bethany with Lazarus, Mary, and Martha, a great crowd (ὁ ὄχλος πολὺς) had come (ὁ ἐλθὼν) to the festival (εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν).  They had heard (ἀκούσαντες) that Jesus (Ἰησοῦς) was coming (ὅτι ἔρχεται) to Jerusalem (εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα).  This would be the triumphal visit to Jerusalem that would become known as Palm Sunday.  This experience can be found in all the other synoptic gospels, Mark, chapter 11:7-10, Matthew, chapter 21:4-9, and Luke, chapter 19:35-38.  All of them preceded this entrance by having the disciples get a donkey for Jesus.  In John, the story goes from Bethany to Jerusalem without any indication of anyone trying to find a donkey.  Passover was one of the three major feasts for pious Jews to go to Jerusalem along with the festival of Pentecost and Tabernacles.  Jesus was about to make a grand entrance into Jerusalem for this Passover festival.  Do you observe your religious holidays?
