They might believe (Jn 11:42-11:42)

“I know

That you always

Hear me.

But I have said this

For the sake

Of the crowd

Standing here,

So that they may believe

That you sent me.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus knew (ἐγὼ δὲ ᾔδειν) that the Father always heard him (ὅτι πάντοτέ μου ἀκούεις).  However (ἀλλὰ), he had said (εἶπον) this for the sake of the crowd (διὰ τὸν ὄχλον) standing around here (τὸν περιεστῶτα).  Thus, they might believe (ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν) that the Father had sent him (ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας).  Jesus clearly was playing to the crowd.  He wanted them to realize the connection between Jesus and the Father.  He wanted them to fully understand that he was sent by the Father so that they might believe in God, the Father and his Son, Jesus, himself.  Do you play to the crowd to influence other people?
