Your father is a liar (Jn 8:44-8:44)

“You are from

Your father,

The devil.

You choose

To do

Your father’s desires.

He was a murderer

From the beginning.

He does not stand

In the truth,

Because there is no truth

In him.

When he lies,

He speaks

According to his own nature.

He is a liar.

He is the father of lies.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that they were from their father (ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς), who was the devil (τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστὲ).  They choose to do (θέλετε ποιεῖν) their father’s desires (καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν).  Their devil father was a murderer (καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν) from the beginning (ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς).  He did not and does not stand (οὐκ ἔστηκεν) in the truth (καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ), because there is no truth (ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια) in him (ἐν αὐτῷ).  When he speaks lies (ὅταν λαλῇ τὸ ψεῦδος), he speaks according to his own nature (ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ).  He is a liar (ὅτι ψεύστης), the father of lies (ἐστὶν καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ).  Suddenly, this dialogue took a dark turn.  Jesus accused these Jewish religious people of being associated with the devil as their father.  They followed their devil father who was a murderer and a liar.  His very nature was a lie, so that the devil was the father of all lies.  This was a strong recrimination against the Jewish leaders and has led to a lot of anti-Semitism based on this verse.  Have you ever said that someone’s father was a devil?
