You are not like Abraham! (Jn 8:40-8:40)

“But now you seek

To kill me,

A man

Who has told you

The truth

That I heard

From God.

This is not

What Abraham did.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said now they were seeking (νῦν δὲ ζητεῖτέ) to kill him (με ἀποκτεῖναι).  He was a man (ἄνθρωπον) who had told them (ὑμῖν λελάληκα) the truth (ὃς τὴν ἀλήθειαν) that he had heard (ἣν ἤκουσα) from God (τοῦ Θεοῦ).  This is not what Abraham did (τοῦτο Ἀβραὰμ οὐκ ἐποίησεν).  Jesus kept repeating that they were out to kill him, when there has been no specific incident yet.  Here he explicitly called himself a man (ἄνθρωπον), not the word of God.  However, he was telling the truth that he had heard from God.  Once again, there was a comparison of these Jewish leaders with Abraham, who would not have done something like what they were planning to do, trying to kill a man of God.  Would you plan to kill a prophet or a man of God?
