We are not illegitimate children! (Jn 8:41-8:41)

“‘You are indeed doing

What your father does.’

They said to him.

‘We are not

Illegitimate children.

We have one Father,

God himself.’”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that they were doing (ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε) the works (τὰ ἔργα) that their father did (τὰ ἔργα).  They said to Jesus (εἶπαν αὐτῷ) that they were not illegitimate children or born of sexual immorality (Ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας οὐκ ἐγεννήθημεν) or prostitution.  They had one Father (ἕνα Πατέρα ἔχομεν), God himself (τὸν Θεόν).  Now they had come to an agreement.  There was only one Father, God.  However, the dispute was about whether they were the legitimate children of Abraham.  They were not the offspring of Hagar or Keturah, the illegitimate children of Abraham, but the direct descendants of Sarah and Isaac as in Genesis, chapter 25:1-18.  They had only one Father, God almighty, Yahweh.  Abraham was their human ancestor not God.  They thought that Jesus was making himself equivalent to God, the Father.  They were being accused of not being the correct followers of Abraham.  Who do you follow?
