“They answered Jesus.
‘Abraham is our father.’
Jesus said to them.
‘If you were Abraham’s children,
You would do
What Abraham did.’”
John uniquely indicated that these people answered (ἀπεκρίθησαν) Jesus. They said to him (καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ) that Abraham was (Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν) their father (Ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν). They did not have another father. Jesus (ὁ Ἰησοῦς) then said to them (λέγει αὐτοῖς) if they were the true children of Abraham (Εἰ τέκνα τοῦ Ἀβραάμ ἐστε), they would do (ποιεῖτε) what Abraham did, his works (ὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ). These Jewish listeners of Jesus said that their father was Abraham, not the Father of Jesus. Jesus then reminded them that their father Abraham had done the right works of the Father of Jesus. Thus, they should do what Abraham had done. Do you consider yourselves children of Abraham?
