Eat and drink the Son of Man! (Jn 6:53-6:53)

“Thus,

Jesus

Said to them.

‘Truly!

Very truly!

I say to you!

Unless you eat

The flesh

Of the Son of Man

And drink

His blood,

You will have

No life

In you.’”

John indicated that Jesus tried to clarify his words with a more definitive tone.  Thus, Jesus (ὁ Ἰησοῦς) spoke to them (εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς) with a solemn pronouncement (Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν).  Unless they ate (ἐὰν μὴ φάγητε) the flesh (τὴν σάρκα) of the Son of Man (τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου), himself, and drank (καὶ πίητε) his blood (αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα), they would not have life (οὐκ ἔχετε ζωὴν) in them (ἐν ἑαυτοῖς).  The Jewish people did not take kindly to blood, even in animals.  Thus, this spiritual symbolic eating and drinking of the body and blood of Jesus may already have had a sacramental history at the time of the writing of this gospel.  There could be no spiritual life without the Eucharistic bread and wine, the body and blood of Jesus.  John had Jesus give the theoretical theological base for this developing sacramental theology of the communion of the body and blood of Jesus.  This statement will have a profound effect on the emerging Eucharistic communion concept with Jesus, the Christ.  The early Christian followers of Jesus would see the growth of this eating and drinking of the body and blood of Jesus into a fully blown sacramental mystery.  Do you take part in a community communion service with Jesus?
