The prophets have spoken (Jn 6:45-6:45)

“It is written

In the prophets.

‘They shall all

Be taught

By God.’

Everyone

Who has heard

And learned

From the Father

Comes to me.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that it was written (ἔστιν γεγραμμένον) in the prophets (ἐν τοῖς προφήταις) that they shall all be taught by God (Καὶ ἔσονται πάντες διδακτοὶ Θεοῦ).  Everyone (πᾶς) who has heard (ὁ ἀκούσας) and learned (καὶ μαθὼν) from the Father (παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς) comes to Jesus (ἔρχεται πρὸς ἐμέ).  This is probably a reference to the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Hosea.  Second Isaiah, chapter 54:13, said that the children at the new Jerusalem would be taught directly by Yahweh.  They would have great prosperity, as righteousness would prevail.  There would be no oppression, fear, or terror because of the established righteousness of this city and its people.  Jeremiah, chapter 31:34, said Yahweh would give a new covenant written in the hearts of the people of Israel.  It would be within them, so that they would not have to teach each other to know Yahweh.  Yahweh was going to be their God.  They were to be his people, plain and simple.  There was no great need for any kind of education.  From the least to the greatest, they would all know Yahweh, since he was going to forget their iniquity.  He was not going to remember their sins anymore.  There would be a clean slate with this new covenant of interior knowledge and love.  The law was no longer imposed from outside but came from within.  Hosea, chapter 11:4, said that when Israel was a child, Yahweh loved him.  He had called his son out of Egypt.  However, the more that he called them, the more that they went from him.  They kept sacrificing to the Baals, offering incense to these idols.  Yahweh was the one who taught Ephraim how to walk.  He took him up in his arms.  They did not know that he had healed them.  He led them around with cords of human kindness and bands of love.  He lifted them up to his cheeks.  He bent down to fed them.  Now instead of Israel or Ephraim as an unfaithful lover as earlier, Israel and Ephraim have become ungrateful children.  Jesus’ reference to these prophets and the direct contact with God was an example of how the Father had chosen them.  They, however, had to respond by going to Jesus.  Are you willing to follow Jesus?
