“Then they said
‘What must we do
The works of God?’”
εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί ποιῶμεν ἵνα ἐργαζώμεθα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ;
John uniquely indicated that this crowd or some representatives of the crowd spoke to Jesus (εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτόν). They wanted to know what were the works of God (τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ) that they should be doing (Τί ποιῶμεν ἵνα ἐργαζώμεθα). They realized that they had to do something to receive the eternal food of Jesus. They wanted to know exactly what were they to do. What was the plan to gain eternal life? What was God’s work? This discourse of Jesus was not in the other canonical synoptic gospels. Do you want to do the work of God?
