They wanted more food (Jn 6:26-6:26)

“Jesus answered them.

Very truly!

I say to you!

You are looking

For me,

Not because

You saw signs,

But because

You ate your fill

Of the loaves.’”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus answered them (ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς) with a solemn pronouncement (καὶ εἶπεν Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν) that was also a mild rebuke.  He said that they were looking for him (ζητεῖτέ με), not because they had seen (οὐχ ὅτι εἴδετε) his signs or miracles (σημεῖα), but because (ἀλλ’ ὅτι) they had eaten (ἐφάγετε) and been filled or satisfied (καὶ ἐχορτάσθητε) with the bread (ἐκ τῶν ἄρτων) from the miraculous multiplication of the loaves and fishes.  They had missed the point of the spiritual sign or meaning of the bread multiplication.  They were only interested in their own physical hunger, since they simply wanted more free food.  This discourse was not in the other canonical synoptic gospels.  Are you motives pure?
