The hour is coming (Jn 5:25-5:25)

I say to you!

The hour is coming.

It now is

When the dead

Will hear

The voice

Of the Son of God.

Those who hear it

Will live.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus continued with his theological monologue.  Now, it seems like Jesus was turning to the people who were already dead.  Jesus once again uttered a solemn pronouncement (ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν) that was also common among the synoptics.  He said that the hour was coming (ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα), but it was now (καὶ νῦν ἐστιν) in fact here already.  Thus, the dead (ὅτε οἱ νεκροὶ) would hear (ἀκούσουσιν) the voice (τῆς φωνῆς) of the Son of God (τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ).  Those who heard it (καὶ οἱ ἀκούσαντες) would live (ζήσουσιν).  Somehow the voice of Jesus, the Son, would reach the dead people for their final judgement.  However, those who heard his voice would have eternal life.  Once again, this is like a realized eschatology, with the end times here already, not in some future time.  Are you waiting for the final resurrection?
