Believing and not believing (Jn 3:18-3:18)

“Those who believe

In Jesus

Are not condemned.

But those who do not believe

Are condemned already.

Because they have not believed

In the name

Of the only Son of God.”

John uniquely said that those who believed (ὁ πιστεύων) in him, the only Son of God, Jesus (εἰς αὐτὸν), were not condemned (οὐ κρίνεται).  However, those who do not believe (ὁ μὴ πιστεύων) in him have already been judged or condemned (ἤδη κέκριται).  They did not believe (ὅτι μὴ πεπίστευκεν) in the name (εἰς τὸ ὄνομα) of the only son of God (τοῦ μονογενοῦς Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ).  This unbelief was a rebellion against God.  They have already been judged guilty.  Belief in the name was belief in the person, the only Son of God, Jesus.  The power of God was in his name, just as the name of Yahweh rested in the Temple of Solomon.  Do you believe in the power of the name of Jesus?
