Looking for a sign (Jn 2:18-2:18)

“The Jews then said

To Jesus.

‘What sign

Can you show us

For doing this?’”

ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί σημεῖον δεικνύεις ἡμῖν, ὅτι ταῦτα ποιεῖς

Only John uniquely indicated that the Jews (οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι), or the Jewish Temple authorities, spoke to Jesus (καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ).  They demanded (ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν) a sign (Τί σημεῖον) to show them (δεικνύεις ἡμῖν) that he had the authority to clean out the Temple or do these things (ὅτι ταῦτα ποιεῖς).  These Jewish leaders wanted to see signs, a favorite them of the Gospel of John.  A sign meant a miracle that revealed the power and glory of God in Christ.  Jesus had just upset the whole Temple procedures.  Who gave him the right to do all this?  Have you ever been upset about the money collections at your church or temple?
