Jesus responded to Nicodemus (Jn 3:3-3:3)

“Jesus answered him.

‘Very truly!

I tell you!

No one can see

The kingdom of God

Without being born

From above.’”

John has this response of Jesus in this unique conversation with Nicodemus.  Jesus began his response (ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς) with a solemn pronouncement with the words amen! amen (καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν)!  This could be translated as for sure, in truth, or very truly.  He told him (λέγω σοι) that anyone not born from above or again (ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν) cannot have the power to see (οὐ δύναται ἰδεῖν) the kingdom of God (τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ).  Some sort of spiritual birth was necessary to enter the Kingdom of God.  Jesus talked about the kingdom of God and the need to be born from above.  Quite often this is referred to as a born-again experience that is often used by some Christians who feel that every Christian should be born again.  The use of the Kingdom of God was quite common in the synoptics, but this is the only use of this phrase in this gospel.  Jesus was clear about the importance of the Kingdom of God and being born spiritually again.  Have you been born again in Jesus Christ?
