Philip finds Nathanael (Jn 1:45-1:45)

“Philip found Nathanael.

He said to him.

‘We have found him,

About whom Moses

In the law

And also,

The prophets

Wrote,

Jesus,

The son of Joseph,

From Nazareth.’”

Only John uniquely indicated that Philip set out to get other disciples.  Philip found Nathanael (εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ), who is a kind of a mystery man.  His name did not appear among the disciples or the apostles of Jesus in any of the other synoptic gospels or lists of the 12 apostles.  However, it might be there under the name Bartholomew, since this gospel never mentioned that name at all.  Many people in the first century CE had two names, a Greek and Hebrew or Aramaic name.  He was probably from Cana, certainly a Galilean, since that is mentioned later in John, chapter 21:2, in the post-resurrection appearances.  John uniquely stated that Philip explained to this Nathanael (καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ) that they had found (εὑρήκαμεν) the one that Moses (Μωϋσῆς), in the law (ἐν τῷ νόμῳ) and the prophets (καὶ οἱ προφῆται) had written about (Ὃν ἔγραψεν).  Both Philip and Nathanael were steeped in Israelite history and religion and able to read.  This holy one was Jesus (Ἰησοῦν), the son of Joseph (υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ), from Nazareth (τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ).  John has this the first explicit mention of the human side of Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth, since he had previously called him the Word, God, life, light, creator, the only begotten Son of God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Christ, and the lamb of God.  The only human terms were Rabbi, teacher, prophet, messiah.  John now developed the flesh side of the Word that became flesh.  Do you believe that God became incarnate?
