They had recognized Jesus (Lk 24:35-24:35)

“Then they told them

What had happened

On the road.

They explained

How Jesus

Had been made known

To them

In the breaking

Of the bread.”

καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐξηγοῦντο τὰ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ ὡς ἐγνώσθη αὐτοῖς ἐν τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου.

Luke uniquely indicated that these two disciples then told (καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐξηγοῦντο) these apostles and disciples what had happened on the road (τὰ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ) to Emmaus.  They explained how Jesus had been made known to them or they recognized him (καὶ ὡς ἐγνώσθη αὐτοῖς) in the breaking of the bread (ἐν τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου).  It is interesting to note that they did not recognize Jesus when he was explaining scripture to them.  However, once he blessed and broke the bread, they immediately recognized Jesus.  Luke was the only canonical gospel writer who had this story about the two disciples and their trip to Emmaus.  Do you recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread?
