The suffering Messiah (Lk 24:26-24:26)

“Was it not necessary

That the Messiah Christ

Should suffer these things

And enter

Into his glory?”

οὐχὶ ταῦτα ἔδει παθεῖν τὸν Χριστὸν καὶ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ;

Luke uniquely had the unrecognized Jesus continue asking whether it was not necessary that the Messiah Christ should suffer these things (οὐχὶ ταῦτα ἔδει παθεῖν τὸν Χριστὸν) and then enter into his glory (καὶ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ)?  Jesus seemed to be explaining to these two disciples why it was necessary for Jesus to suffer so that he could come into his glory, although this was not part of the general Jewish messianic expectations.  Luke is the only canonical gospel writer who has this story about the two disciples on their way to Emmaus in a discussion with Jesus.  Do you think that it was necessary for Jesus to suffer?
