“But they strongly urged
Jesus.
‘Stay with us!
It is almost evening.
The day is now nearly over.’
Thus,
Jesus went in
To stay with them.”
Luke uniquely indicated that the two disciples strongly urged (καὶ παρεβιάσαντο) the unrecognizable Jesus (αὐτὸν λέγοντες) to stay with them (Μεῖνον μεθ’ ἡμῶν). It was almost evening (ὅτι πρὸς ἑσπέραν ἐστὶν) and the day was nearly over (καὶ κέκλικεν ἤδη ἡ ἡμέρα). Thus, Jesus went in to stay with them (καὶ εἰσῆλθεν τοῦ μεῖναι σὺν αὐτοῖς). Jesus did not go any further, but stayed at Emmaus. Luke is the only canonical gospel writer who has this story about the two disciples in Emmaus with Jesus. Would you ask a stranger to stay with you?
