The number of musicians (1 Chr 25:6-25:8)

“Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king. They and their kindred, who were trained in singing to Yahweh, all of whom were skilful, numbered two hundred and eighty-eight. They cast lots for their duties, small and great, teacher and pupil alike.”

These 3 leaders of the music in the temple were under the order of the king, either King David or King Solomon. The total number of these trained skilled musicians was 288. This is quite a lot less than the number of 4,000 that was in this book in chapter 23. Perhaps this was only the singers. Even a couple of hundred seems high, but more reasonable. They did not act independently of the king, whoever he might be. They cast lots, as per usual, to get their assigned duties. Both the teachers and the pupils were involved, but usually things turn out the way they should be in these lotteries.
