“So the people of Israel gave the Levites the towns with their pasture lands. They also gave them by lot out of the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin these towns which are mentioned by name. Some of the families of the sons of Kohath had towns of their territory out of the tribe of Ephraim.”
There were 48 Levite towns with their pastures. For a tribe that received no territory they often inhabited the better towns. The prize towns were in the south in Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, but the Kohathites also got towns in Ephraim.
