“Then King Jehu assembled all the people. He said to them. ‘King Ahab offered Baal a small service. However, King Jehu will offer much more. Now therefore summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing. I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.’ But King Jehu was acting with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal. King Jehu decreed. ‘Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal.’ So they proclaimed it. King Jehu sent word throughout all Israel. All the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was no one left who did not come. They entered the temple of Baal, until the temple of Baal was filled from wall to wall. He said to the keeper of the wardrobe. ‘Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.’ So he brought out the vestments for them. Then King Jehu entered the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Rechab. He said to the worshipers of Baal. ‘Search and make sure that there is no worshipper of Yahweh here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.’ Then he went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.”
King Jehu said that King Ahab had worshipped Baal a little bit, but he wanted to worship Baal much more. He wanted to have a great big Baal worship sacrifice celebration. He called all the Baal prophets, priests, and worshippers to offer a great sacrifice to Baal. If any Baal believer did not show up, they would be killed. Thus the Baal people were very happy. This was the cunning plot of King Jehu to get rid of these Baal worshippers. They all came together at the house of Baal and put on the vestments of worship. He even made sure that there were no worshippers who were not Baal worshippers. This seems like one big happy family of Baal worshippers. Then he went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.
