The appearance of Samuel to Saul (1 Sam 28:15-28:19)

“Then Samuel said to Saul. ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?’ Saul answered. ‘I am in great distress. The Philistines are warring against me. But God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I should do.’ Samuel said. ‘Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has turned from you and become your enemy? Yahweh has done to you as he spoke by me. Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of Yahweh, and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you today. Moreover Yahweh will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me. Yahweh will give the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.”

The fact that the female soothsayer could bring up Samuel means that the authors of the Bible believed that this was possible. Just as they believed that dreams were a way of contacting other people. They believed in apparitions so that someone from the dead appearing seemed conceivable. The news is not good from Samuel. Yahweh does not answer Saul because Yahweh wanted to take the kingdom away from him and give it to David. Saul had disobeyed the annihilation of the Amalekites therefore things are going against him. Tomorrow he and his sons would die at the hands of the Philistines.
