“Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah, of the clan of Judah. He was a Levite residing there. This man left the town of Bethlehem in Judah, to live wherever he could find a place. He came to the house of Micah in the hill country of Ephraim to carry on his work. Micah said to him. ‘From where do you come?’ He replied. ‘I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah. I am going to live wherever I can find a place.’”
Now another unnamed person appears on the scene living in Bethlehem. He is a Levite who wants to wander around, ‘wherever.’ This is a strange circumstance. Anyway, he wanders into the house of Micah in Ephraim.
“Then Micah said to him. ‘Stay with me. Be to me a father and a priest. I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, a set of clothes, and your living.’ The Levite agreed to stay with the man. The young man became like one of his sons. So Micah installed the Levite as the young man became his priest in the house of Micah. Then Micah said. ‘Now I know that Yahweh will make me prosper, because the Levite has become my priest.’”
Micah pays to have this young Levite stay with him to be the priest for his sanctuary. This young man from Judah was a Levite living not as a resident alien but like the son of Micah. This is a very strange incident because Micah believes that he is pleasing Yahweh. Therefore Yahweh will make him prosperous.
