The anointing oil (Ex 30:22-30:33)

Yahweh spoke to Moses.  ‘Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, two hundred and fifty, and two hundred and fifty of aromatic cane, and five hundred of cassia, measured by the sanctuary shekel, and a hin of olive oil. You shall make of this sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer.  It shall be holy anointing oil.  With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting, the Ark of the Covenant, the table and all its utensils, the lamp stand and its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.  You shall consecrate them, so that they may be most holy.  Whatever touches them will become holy.  You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, in order that they may serve me as priests.   You shall say to the Israelites. This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations.  It shall not be used in any ordinary anointing of the body.  You shall make no other like it in composition.  It is holy.  It shall be holy to you.  Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an unqualified person shall be cut off from the people.’”

The anointing is a big deal for the Israelites. There was a precise recipe for making this oil, ointment, or cream, as measured by the sanctuary shekel, about a half ounce, while a hin was about five liters.  This oil was blended together by a perfumer.

This holy oil contained the following:

1)      500 shekels of the finest spices of liquid myrrh;

2)      250 shekels of sweet-smelling cinnamon;

3)      250 shekels of aromatic cane;

4)      500 shekels of cassia;

5)      A hin or 5 liters of olive oil.

This then is the holy anointing oil, that is used to anoint the:

1)      Tent of meeting;

2)      Ark of the Covenant;

3)      Table and all its utensils;

4)      Lamp stand and all its utensils;

5)      Altar of incense;

6)      Altar of burnt offerings with all its utensils;

7)      Basin with its stand;

8)      Aaron and his sons.

This holy anointing oil continues throughout all generations.  You cannot use it in any ordinary anointing of the body.  You cannot make a composition like it.  If you profane this holy oil, you will be cut off from the rest of the people.
