Seducing a virgin (Ex 22:16-22:17)

“When a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married, and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife.  But if her father refuses to give her to him, he shall pay an amount equal to the bride-price for virgins.”

Virgins are treated like property of their fathers.   So if a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged and lies with her, he has to give ‘the bride-price’ for her and make her his wife.  But if her father refuses, he still had to pay ‘the bride-price.’  Now you know why they ask who gives this bride. The father always responds.  There is no talk of rape here.
